This is a News Editor role with The Daily Aus based in Sydney, NSW, AU

Role Seniority - senior

More about the News Editor role at The Daily Aus

We're seeking a News Editor to strengthen The Daily Aus's editorial leadership across all our content verticals. This is a unique opportunity to shape how millions of young Australians understand their world through social media, video, podcasting, and newsletters.

Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, you'll be part of the team that leads TDA's essential news coverage and supports our expanding verticals. You'll ensure every story we publish meets our high standards and serves our mission of making news accessible for young Australians.

This Role Is For You If

  • You don’t mind being the ‘go-to’ person (and secretly love it).
  • You’re not precious, and there’s no task below you.
  • You’re excited to help elevate the editorial product, not just your own work.
  • You love TDA and know our voice, values and audience.

About The Role

  • This is a genuine opportunity for a senior journalist who’s ready to stretch their editorial wings while still keeping their creator finger on the pulse.
  • It’s a get-stuff-done position, perfect for a tactical doer and a strategic thinker. One who learns to love our TDA style guidelines.
  • Curious questions are how you start your day (‘how can I help’), and contribution is how you measure success (‘where have I had impact’).
  • You’ll be hands-on, creating and editing content across our platforms, supporting the team to tell the news in accessible and engaging ways. We prioritise unbiased, explanatory style journalism that is accessible and verifiable.

What you'll do

  • Write and present up to 2x podcasts a week (produce and present).
  • Edit video scripts and final drafts across multiple TDA products.
  • Review and fact-check breaking news in real-time.
  • Collaborate with journalists to level up their work with generous, ego-free feedback (and welcome that feedback for your own work).
  • Find primary sources for rapidly developing stories.
  • Bring sharp editorial judgement and attention to detail across diverse content.
  • Contribute to editorial strategy and workflows and be ready to jump in wherever needed.

Who You Are

  • A senior multimedia journalist with at least 5 years’ experience
  • You’ve got solid production skills, including familiarity with Adobe Suite or equivalent
  • You’re creatively independent but strategically aligned to TDA’s editorial tone
  • You have a strong editorial instinct and know how to bring it to life across scripts, reels, and posts
  • You understand the art of writing for different platforms: concise, credible, and clear
  • You take feedback well. You give it even better.
  • You can switch gears fast. From podcast to script edit to breaking news, you bring full focus to whatever is in front of you.
  • You’re solutions-focused, a workflow geek, and you love the thrill of a small team doing big things.
  • You live and breathe what we do. You’re cool with unpredictable hours to capture the story - we work in news, after all.

What We Offer

  • A culture that values big ideas, small details, and clear, kind feedback.
  • The chance to shape youth media in Australia.
  • The joy of doing work that matters.

Before we jump into the responsibilities of the role. No matter what you come in knowing, you’ll be learning new things all the time and the The Daily Aus team will be there to support your growth.

🟢 Please consider applying even if you don't meet 100% of what’s outlined 🟢

Key Responsibilities

  • 🎤 Writing and presenting podcasts
  • 🎥 Editing video scripts
  • ✅ Fact-checking news

Key Strengths

  • 📰 Multimedia journalism
  • 🎬 Production skills
  • ✍️ Editorial judgement
  • 💬 Feedback skills
  • ⚡ Adaptability
  • 🔧 Solutions-focused mindset
