More about the Maths Expert (AI Training Specialist) role at Hatch AI

Take 5 minutes to express your interest in hearing more about an AI Training position.

This is an expression of interest, not an open job. We're gauging interest from Mathematics PhDs in Australia for upcoming work with a partner AI lab. If your background fits and the work progresses, we'll be in touch with full details. Expressing interest is not an application and not a commitment.

Candidates that express interest early and meet our eligibility require will have an advantage over other candidates if the work progresses.

Note: This role is not with Hatch. It is for our partner AI Lab. Hatch sources, screens, and supports the Australian contributors who join.

The role

Contribute to AI research in flexible, casual, and part-time work. You'll use your advanced mathematical training to evaluate AI-generated content and provide feedback that helps AI better understand mathematical reasoning, proof construction, and technical problem-solving.

This is an ongoing, project-based opportunity that can be done alongside research, teaching, postdoctoral work, or industry employment.

  • Flexible hours, work from anywhere
  • Open to PhDs and postdocs in Mathematics or closely related fields
  • Suits people who care about their work and want to shape the future

What you'll be working on

  • This project involves using your experience in mathematics to design rigorous, domain-relevant questions and review AI-generated responses for accuracy, logical consistency, and mathematical rigour. No prior AI or technical experience is required.
  • Fully remote with a flexible, asynchronous schedule and no minimum hour requirement; most contributors work approximately 5–20 hours per week when participating in an active project.
  • Placement depends on current project needs, with opportunities to be considered for future projects as they become available.

What we're looking for

  • Doctoral students and graduates (including those currently enrolled in a PhD program or in postdoctoral positions) in Mathematics or closely related fields.
  • Strong background in advanced physical reasoning, mathematical modelling, theoretical analysis, and quantitative problem-solving across core areas such as classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, or related sub-disciplines.

We're also looking for:

Engagement & Motivation

  • Actively participates, asks questions
  • Shows interest in the work and in learning the apps/agents

Receptiveness to Feedback / Trainability

  • Takes feedback without defensiveness
  • Quickly incorporates feedback into next attempt
  • Proactively seeks clarification when unsure

Communication & English Proficiency

  • Clear written English (no oversimplified or “off” wording)
  • Can explain reasoning/justifications in natural language
  • Communicates regularly with team lead and responds promptly

Attention to Detail / Conscientiousness

  • Follows written instructions precisely
  • Spots inconsistencies or errors in prompts/recordings
  • Adheres to guidelines without cutting corners

Basic Computer Literacy & App Comfort

  • Navigates web apps confidently
  • Can search/filter/find specific records in seeded apps
  • Handles multiple simple tasks in new UIs

Integrity (No LLM/ChatGPT Misuse)

  • Completes work themselves
  • Does not rely on LLMs for justifications or application answers

Before we jump into the responsibilities of the role. No matter what you come in knowing, you’ll be learning new things all the time and the Hatch AI team will be there to support your growth.
