We’re searching for a capable Proposal Writer II to join our growing team. As a member of the Proposal Development team, you will have a firsthand role in supporting Nelnet’s diversification efforts in areas like technology, business processing outsourcing (BPO), and government services. The ideal candidate will have excellent writing and editing skills, a collaborative mindset, a strong attention to detail, and the ability to work well in a deadline-driven environment. This individual will ensure proposal responses are accurate, high quality, and persuasive, and will have a higher degree of responsibility for managing projects and delivering on team standards and expectations.We are particularly interested in candidates with experience responding to government requests for proposals (RFPs), particularly federal opportunities. Writing samples are welcome; an editing test will be part of the recruiting process.
At this time, we are unable to move forward with candidates that reside in these states: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Analyzing and evaluating RFP requirements to develop a clear understanding of proposal expectations.
2. Proposal writing, including, but not limited to: developing outlines based on RFP requirements; creating initial drafts using existing content; collaborating with subject matter experts to create and refine content; incorporating feedback throughout the drafting and review stages; collaborating with designers on new or revised graphics; and writing and tailoring resumes.
3. Modeling team writing standards, best practices for developing proposals, and expectations for collaboration and communication.
4. Meeting all proposal milestones, including delivering drafts or other deliverables on time.
5. Supporting the final production (desktop publishing) process, including final proofreading, page layout, PDF production, and reviews for accessibility.
6. Contributing to the maintenance of the team’s content management system for proposals and other relevant content.
7. Assisting other team members or with other writing assignments, as assigned.
EDUCATION:
- 4-year degree in English, Technical Writing, Communications, Marketing, or related field, or equivalent professional experience
- APMP membership or certification a plus
EXPERIENCE:
- 4 years minimum in a writing-focused position
- 2 years minimum of proposal writing experience
- Experience responding to federal government RFPs strongly desired
COMPETENCIES – SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:
1. Proven mastery of English language and grammar, with the ability to write, edit, and/or proofread well-written, concise, compelling content.
2. Ability to follow writing standards; strong familiarity with AP or CMOS.
3. Exceptional oral and written communication, problem solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills, coupled with strong attention to detail.
4. Effective interpersonal skills exemplified by initiative, courtesy, diplomacy, positive attitude, professionalism, and appropriate business ethics.
5. Critical thinking skills and the ability to identify and correct text to be logical, relevant, and appropriate to the situation.
6. Demonstrated ability to meet critical deadlines and balance multiple priorities; may require some schedule flexibility.
7. Ability to operate independently and produce high-quality, polished work with limited oversight.
8. Skilled in standard office software; expertise with Microsoft Word essential.
9. Strong project management skills, including the ability to successfully define and execute project activities from initiation through completion.
10. Understanding of the various business lines at Nelnet.
Annual compensation range for this position is $57,000 - $77,000.
