Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

The Stripe Assistant team is transforming how users interact with Stripe, by building an intelligent and proactive assistant that not only answers users queries but efficiently resolves user issues and provides valuable business insights. We are leveraging LLMs and agentic systems to improve support interactions and elevate the user experience everywhere across Stripe. We are also enabling other teams at Stripe to build and integrate their AI agents with our platform, to easily extend Stripe Assistant’s functionality across many different use cases.

What you’ll do

As a Senior Software Engineer on the team, you'll be instrumental in architecting and developing the systems that power the Stripe Assistant. These include the core systems that enable Stripe Assistant to respond to user queries in a real-time and context-aware manner, as well as supporting systems for evaluation, benchmarking, and coordination across dozens of AI agents and hundreds of tools. You’ll focus on integrating novel machine learning approaches into the assistant, in a scalable, reliable and secure manner. You’ll also be working at the intersection of AI and UI, designing and implementing novel ways for the Assistant to present rich responses to users.

Responsibilities

Our team operates fluidly and here are some problems you may tackle:

  • Working through the nuances of natural language to identify user intent
  • Improving the quality of our retrieval augmented generation (RAG) process
  • Creating AI models that capture the expertise and experience of human agents
  • Building a platform to enable easy and safe integration of many AI agents and tools
  • Integrating and evaluating the quality of the latest LLMs, and eventually fine-tuning them
  • Relentlessly improving the quality of our responses to users, and learning from user feedback to ship iteratively
  • Leading team processes, improving operational rigor, creating product roadmaps, and spearheading technical direction
  • Being a collaborative cross-functional partner

Who you are

We’re looking for people with a strong background or interest in building successful products or systems; you’re passionate about solving business problems and making impact, you are comfortable in dealing with lots of moving pieces; and you’re comfortable learning new technologies and systems. You are comfortable working with other Stripe teams across the US and Canada.

Minimum requirements

  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Strong understanding of statistical experimentation concepts (A/B testing, power analysis, confidence intervals, multiple-testing corrections)
  • Proficient in at least one of the modern programming languages (e.g. Java, Ruby, Python, Typescript).
  • Hands-on experience with stream or batch data processing technologies (Kafka, Flink, Spark, Trino, or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with ML engineers, data scientists, product managers, and other engineers to translate business questions into reliable technical solutions

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience shipping applied LLM systems at scale to end users with high quality
  • Experience training and shipping machine learning models to production to solve critical business problems
Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for individuals and their teams.

The annual US base salary range for this role is $187,500 - $281,300. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the US may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.

Additional benefits for this role may include: equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses; 401(k) plan; medical, dental, and vision benefits; and wellness stipends.
