Principal AI/ML Engineer
Lead the Next Wave of AI-Driven Innovation at WeMoney & Elevate Financial Wellness for Australians
Personal finance is broken.
Ever wonder why people struggle to manage their finances effectively? Or why do young people struggle for decades or more to regain financial stability after financial missteps from their youth? At WeMoney we wonder that too and it keeps us up at night.
This problem on the surface was for a long period thought of as intractable, too difficult to solve, or “just the way it is”, but at WeMoney, we felt that this status quo was unacceptable. We believe that something needs to exist to allow everyone to take control of their financial destiny.
Our mission is to simplify and automate financial management, making it accessible and understandable for all, regardless of their background or education, and helping our members break the cycle of financial insecurity and build a brighter, more secure future.
Are you insanely curious about this problem and WeMoney? Then we’d love to connect with you.
Your Opportunity
As Principal AI/ML Engineer at WeMoney, you will be our chief architect of intelligent solutions, developing frontier performance software that revolutionises how everyday Australians interact with their money. You’ll be the driving force behind applying machine learning to real-world challenges like supply-demand matching, predictive analytics, hyper-personalisation, and optimisation problems, ensuring that every WeMoney member experiences truly life-changing financial insights and automation.
What You’ll Do
Architect Intelligent Systems:
- Own end-to-end AI/ML initiatives, from ideation to deployment, with a special focus on personalisation, real-time recommendations, and demand forecasting.
- Develop advanced ML pipelines that harness massive datasets and deliver low-latency, high-impact user experiences.
Frontier Problem-Solving
- Tackle thorny supply-demand matching challenges, designing algorithms that seamlessly connect users with optimal financial services and recommendations.
- Deploy reinforcement learning, transformer-based models, or graph-based approaches to unlock breakthroughs in user engagement and retention.
Build Frontier Performance Software
- Implement highly optimised architectures capable of handling millions of transactions and complex data streams simultaneously.
- Champion best practices in scalability, concurrency, and latency management for robust, always-on financial tools.
Ensure Data Quality & Protection
- Craft robust data pipelines with a relentless focus on accuracy, security, and compliance.
- Partner with legal, compliance, and operations teams to meet CDR (Consumer Data Right) standards, ensuring our models remain fully auditable in a regulated environment.
Mentor & Lead
- Guide a diverse, high-performing team of ML engineers and data scientists, nurturing their growth and technical skills.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, and Data to translate financial complexities into intuitive, AI-powered user features.
Maintain a Standard of Excellence and Technical Brilliance
- Stay at the cutting edge of AI/ML research—think generative AI, deep reinforcement learning, or federated learning—and evaluate their applicability in fintech.
- Monitor production models and performance metrics, orchestrating retraining or fine-tuning to deliver consistent, high-accuracy outputs.
Champion Positive Financial Impact
- Keep your eye on the bigger picture: improving people’s financial well-being.
- Embed empathetic design principles into our AI, ensuring members receive insights that are relevant, supportive, and help them grow financially.
Who we’re looking for:
Deep ML/AI Expertise
- 8+ years of hands-on experience delivering large-scale ML solutions in production.
- Mastery of Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, or similar.
- Proven track record with advanced methods (e.g., transformers, graph neural networks, generative AI, reinforcement learning).
Frontier Software Engineering Talent
- Ability to architect high-performance, cloud-based solutions (AWS or GCP).
- Familiarity with microservices, distributed systems, DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and Kubernetes deployment strategies.
Problem-Solving Prowess
- Demonstrated successes in demand forecasting, personalisation engines, or credit risk modelling.
- A knack for breaking down complex financial workflows into elegant ML solutions.
Regulatory & Compliance Awareness
- Experience in regulated industries (fintech, healthtech, etc.), ensuring Privacy Act, CDR, or similar data protections.
- Understanding of data governance principles, including secure data handling and lineage tracking.
Adaptive Leadership
- History of building and coaching high-performing teams, fostering an inclusive and collaborative culture.
- Comfortable conveying technical ideas to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
Passion for Positive Change
- Motivated by the opportunity to make a societal wide positive impact in financial services—where robust, preventative AI solutions can transform real lives.
- Able to thrive in a mission-driven environment, innovation and responsibility.
