Company Description

Wise is a global technology company, building the best way to move and manage the world’s money.
Min fees. Max ease. Full speed.

Whether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their lives easier and save them money.

As part of our team, you will be helping us create an entirely new network for the world's money.
For everyone, everywhere.

More about our mission and what we offer.

Job Description

Team you will be working with: Cards Payin

The team’s mission is to enable people and businesses to get paid faster, cheaper in any currency via any payment method, anywhere. We’re building a wide array of innovative products across our Acquiring, Payin and Account Details domains to facilitate receiving cross-border payments from around the world.

Our product engineering teams strive to truly understand what our customers need; working hand-in-hand with Product Managers, Analysts and Customer Support to create powerful, scalable solutions for millions of customers. This role offers the chance to make a significant impact, addressing challenges like frictionlessly onboarding customers and enabling seamless international money transfers.

We are looking for an engineer that is passionate about solving complex problems for their stakeholders. Someone who thrives working in an environment where they are empowered to make decisions and drive features and products forward. To do this, we believe that to make the best technical decision, you should have a strong understanding of the products you’re building.

How we work:

We operate on a strong belief in automation, programmatic implementation, and reusable design. We’re looking for people who can step back and think holistically about the ecosystem, but also follow through and help implement the design.

We need to sustain this growth by continuously iterating on the services we run, with a focus on availability, security, and ease of use. We’re looking for an engineer with relevant experience who can analyse complex requirements and deliver simple solutions to help our teams achieve our mission with speed and confidence.

What will you be working on?

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer who will help build our Receive platform within the Cards Payin team. You will work closely with Product, Engineering and Analytics to design and build features and products while limiting risk and ensuring that we are scaling our operations to support millions of customers across the world.

You’ll be working on one of our most convenient payment methods: enabling customers to fund their Wise accounts using bank cards and e-wallets. While it may sound straightforward, the card payments ecosystem is highly diverse, and delivering a seamless, safe, and reliable experience to customers worldwide is no small challenge.

The Cards Pay-in team supports Card and eWallet pay-ins as well as Card Payouts. We partner with several global Payment Service Providers (PSPs), giving us the flexibility to quickly expand into new regions and optimise performance by intelligently routing payments between them.

Project you’ll be joining

Our next big opportunity is Dynamic Routing. Today, it requires regular KPI reviews to spot performance degradations with specific issuers, regions, or providers. In the future, we aim to evolve this into a ML–powered solution that makes smart, automated, and controllable decisions on how payments should be processed optimising both performance and reliability.

Why join us?

If you’re curious about managing complexity in a mature payments domain, our team is full of great learning opportunities. And if you’re already a seasoned engineer, you’ll have the chance to leverage your skills to strengthen Wise’s payment infrastructure — powering a system that currently enables customers to move around £1 billion every month.

Qualifications

  • Strong product mindset with a passion for user experience; driven by customer needs and data-informed decisions.
  • Excellent communicator, able to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Independent and proactive, while being a supportive and collaborative team player.
  • Skilled at breaking down complex projects into clear, incremental milestones that deliver customer value.
  • Hands-on experience developing web applications and distributed systems in production environments.
  • Strong understanding of design and architectural patterns; committed to writing clean, performant, and well-tested code
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases, including query optimization and schema design.
  • Knowledge of Java, Spring Boot, and messaging systems such as Kafka.
